Ive got an older machine. (400 mhz on a baby at board) VIA chipset. The computer is really a pc that I built years ago and Ive taken an oath to keep it running as long at it will run :) Its an extra pc I have so its not really a big deal but Ive always ran windows 98 SE with no problems. I decided to install Windows XP PRO. The install went well but when it booted up it stalled as the desktop started to load. And this is as far as it would go. I booted it up into safe mode and it worked fine. I went to services and disabled everything I could think of that may cause me problems. I booted up and once again it locks up when the desktop starts loading. Mabe its a hardware compatibility problem. Just thought there may be a fix out there somewhere.

Thanks for any help

You could try checking for compatability issues by re-loading 98 and then starting the XP CD and requesting it check the machine out before loading.

Did you upgrade or a fresh install?

How much RAM have you got? How much video RAM?

When in safe mode is there anything in the bootlog that gives a clue?

Does the event viewer give any clues?

If it works in safe mode then you should be able to fix it. Did you check event viewer when you were in safe mode for any errors?

Rather than disable services manually you can click start run and type msconfig. then click on the services tab. Check the box "Hide all microsoft services" then choose disable all. This will disable all non microsoft services. Reboot. If windows boots up fine then you can start turning them back on one by one untill you find the one causing the problem.

It's only easy when you know how.

xp requires 128mb of ram. (that's just barely borderline). i've had that happen to me with pentium 2-400mhz with my win-98se machine with 196mb of ram. it would boot up ok, but freeze after boot up for a while, or just "thrash" (the os would use hdd for virtual memory. when i added more memory, it would boot up ok. but, before i installed, i went through the compatibility check list.

I have had problems with Video drives causeing trouble, you can update them from save mode if that is the problem.

Ive got 512 MB of ram and 32 MB Video card.
I will try the msconfig and disable them all.
I also haven't checked the bootlog. Ill do this also.

Thanks for all the ideas. Ill post what the results are :)

Thanks
