Can't backup database

We can't seem to make a backup of our database cause odbc/sql is running in the server containing the data. We've made a batch file that makes a copy of the data but only if sql is closed. We now we need to somehow run another batch file to close sql and later re-open it after a copy is been made. We just don't have the expertise? Thank in advance
