Can't accessNetwork Shares

I have installed a windows 2000 server in my home connected to a Dlink swith which provides wirelss net access to my laptop and pc.Everyhing seems to work fine except I can't access network shares- I can see the server but can'y browse it. When I set up a share by using the IP address of the server I then can access the share. The Dlink router provides dhcp to all machines.Also when i try to see the workstations from the server i can't see any machines except the server. I can ping all machines using IP and names. The event log on the server shows a 5781 Netlogon error. I have no clue how to solve this. Do I need to run a DNS server on the server even though the router is providing that info?

The immediate solution to your problem is probably enabling NetBIOS over TCP/IP. Turn that on at the server and each workstation and you should be able to browse your shares. A good test would be to try browsing based on the IP address. At your workstation click Start, Run then type "\\192.168.1.1" without the quotes and by substituting your server's IP address. If you see the shares then you know that it is a NetBIOS issue.

For the second part of your question, if you have just a server without a domain then you probably can get away with just using your ISP's DNS servers. If you have a domain of your own you should set up DNS and set the ISP's DNS servers as your DNS Servers forwarder.

it does work when I use the servers IP address. I see all the shares. I am not sure how to enable netbios?

Are the ISP DNS server ip's the one's reported by my router?

To enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP go into the configuration settings for TCP/IP and click the radio button for NetBIOS over TCP/IP. You will find this setting on the WINS tab.

Your ISP's DNS would be what your router is getting automatically assigned.
