Hi,
I'm using AOL and IE 5 on my powerbook. AOL works fine, but everytime I try to access a web page I get an error message saying: "The attempt to load page I want). com failed". I've reinstalled AOL and IE, but it didn't seem to help. Any help is appreciated.

Since your internet connection is working, I'd guess it's proxy settings. Check your preferences for internet explorer. I don't use AOL so I'm not sure if you should have anything set in there or not. At least hopefully that will point you in the right direction.

I ran into this on OS8.x once, many moons ago. A call to AOL support will fix this - - Make use of the service you already pay for. I forgot what I did to fix it.

Thanks for the tips...by the way, do you know Jack Oblak? Just curious...

Jack?

Nope. Darn this internet thing for making the world so small. I thought I was the only Oblak.

Do you have any domain name servers listed in your TCP/IP control panel? I had a similar problem ages ago and adding the server IP to the control panel did the trick.

Well, I go to NDNU in california and the president of the school is Jack O'Blak. Anyhow....I use dialup to access AOL, but I know it uses a PPP server to assign me an IP. I'm pretty sure all of my proxy settings are off. Thanks for the help so far, but no luck!

Yeah, but if you look again at your TCP/IP control panel, there's a couple of boxes towards the bottom for entering name server addresses. You need to add a nameserver address in there.
This is entirely separate from the PPP server automatically assigning you an IP address when you dial in.

I see those boxes at the bottom...what should I put for the name server? aol.com?? thanks

well, i decided to call up aol. The tech had me delete everything out of the america online preferences folder except the data folder. Then he had me delete two art files in the data folder. Then i had to change my tcp/ip configureation to BootP instead of PPP server. That did the trick. When I looked at my tcp/ip settings after getting on the web, it showed an IP address for the name server...so I owe jimoblak and gednick especially a big thank you!
