I have a small network of four clients (XP & W2K Pro) which get their IP addys from a Netopia Router.

One XP Pro client (Client 1) has a HP printer installed and shared. Another W2K client (Client 2)has a Dell Printer installed and shared.

Client 1 can ping and access shares on Client 2 - when I try and access shares (e.g Printer) it asks for a username & password)

When Client 2 tries to ping client 1 by hostname or IP Addy, it times out. When it tries to access it by \\address\sharename - I get the error 'No transport provider available for this request'

Any ideas???

Thanks

The error message actually reads '\\192.168.1.8 is not accessible. There are currently no logon servers available to service the logon request.'

Fix the ping failure.
There is a firewall issue somewhere:

. look out for "hidden" firewalls in Antivirus software (PC-Illan, for example is notorious for this); VPN Client software (CISCO VPN Client software is notorious for this).

. Configure properly existing Firewall software to allow for SMB traffic for TCP and UDP on ports 445, 136-139.

. Remember that disabling software is not going to work in most cases. Zone Alarm for example will continue to block traffic if disabled.

Windows Firewall is enabled and has 'File & Printer sharing' enabled as an exception.

I can map the C$ share by authenticating as the user on Client 1, but I dont have the option of connecting as anyone else when connecting to a printer, so I get 'access denied'

Do you know any workarounds?

AVG Anti-virus and MS Anti-spyware are the only anti-virus software installed.

Thanks

On the XP Client disable the default of Simple File Sharing:

Control Panel, Folder Options, View, 'Use simple file sharing - recommended' should be unchecked.

Then Start, Run, secpol.msc
Security Options
Network Access: Sharing and Security Model for local accounts.
Set to classic.

You now have XP Pro set to the same security model as your Win2k clients.

I would likely at this point remove and then re-add the printer share. But in any case add your account permissions for the other computers/users.

Will try that in the morning so. Thanks again

Did those steps - I can now ping the XP Client by name & address.

When I try and access a share by name or IP addy (\\192.168.1.8 or \\hostname) I get the same error as before

'\\192.168.1.8 is not accessible. There are currently no logon servers available to service the logon request.'

Any ideas??

Thanks

Netbios over TCP/IP enabled?
Is this a Domain or Small Business Server setting?

1. Stop Netlogon service.
2. Open DNS Console.
3. Delete Active Directory Integrated Zone.
4. Stop and Start DNS Service.
5. Close and Re-open DNS Console.
6. Re-create DNS Zone (domain_name)
7. Start Netlogon service.
8. issue ipconfig /registerdns.

Is a WINS server in place? Check the WINS entry for the problem XP machine.

Are you using a local DNS server? Check that the XP machine is registering with DNS.

I'm beginning to think that the problem doesnt lie with the XP client.

Client2 cannot access any of the other clients from either run \\ip addy or through 'My Network places' - I get the same error when I try and access any of the shares.

I'll be back there in the afternoon and will doublecheck Netbios.

There is no WINS Server - just a DSL connection, a Router and four clients

Thanks again

I can connect to the Printer on the XP Client, but I'm waiting on an E1 circuit, and I've expanded the network to about 15 clients - all Windows 2000 Pro.

I need to get some clients connected to local printers on other clients - I can ping the required clients by both hostname & IP addy.

When I try and connect to from any client to any other W2K client, I get the error message '\\client is not accessible. There are currently no logon servers available to service the logon request'

Is there any easy way to allow connections between clients, all on the same 192.168.1.x Subnet, and all with Firewall disabled?

Thanks

You will see the errors in the following scenarios:-
PC YamahaA tries to access PC YamahaB's shared resource \\YamahaB\xyz.
PC YamahaA tries to print on a printer YamahaB_PRN connected to PC YamahaB

Reasons:
What's probably happening is your PC YamahaA is using cached domain credentials when accessing the PC YamahaB. This generally happens when YamahaA belongs to a domain while the YamahaB belongs to a workgroup.

Solution:
The easiest resolution would be: I am using Win2k as an example for the navigation.
1. Share a directory in <YamahaB> say xyz
2. Go to My Network Places in <YamahaA>
3. Right Click and Choose Map network drive
4. Choose a drive letter and in the folder specify \\YamahaB\xyz
5. Click on Connect using a 'different user name'.
6. Enter the YamahaB administrator (or any YamahaB user that has access to the shared resource) and the password.
7. Depending on whether you need to retain the share, choose the 'Reconnect at logon'.
8. Hit 'Finish
9. You should be able to access the shared resource using the mapped drive.
10. Now try accessing the PC YamahaB as \\YamahaB
11. If you have the YamahaB_PRN printer shared, it should be visible now.
12. Connect to the YamahaB_PRN printer and update the required drivers.
13. You should now be able to print.

They are all part of a domain alright, though the DC is temporarily in a different location.

Your solution sounds perfect alright, but how can I connect to a Printer on a different client, as I'm not aware of a way to provide different authentication while attempting to do so?

Thanks

Map a drive letter to a share.
That creates the credential.
Now map the printer.

That worked fine - thanks.

On a couple of occasions though, one client has lost the connection and I've had to double click on the mapped share and enter the password in again - any reason for this to happen?

This is happening each day for some clients, though not others. Some get prompted to enter the authentication password for the C$ share on the pc where the printer is shared from, when they logon. Others dont get prompted and have to double click on the mapped share and then enter the password..
