Hello,

I just updated my computer and installed Windows XP.
When I insert a cd in my dvd-player and I want to browse the cd using explorer I get the message "Invalid function".
Also when I go to my computer and choose the dvd player and then "properties" I get this message. I checked the master slave settings and this is alright. The only way to get it to work is when I go to device-control and then select the dvd-player and then choose "properties". Then the drive starts spinning and I can browse the cd.

My specs are:
AMD Athlon XP 2400+
ASUS A7V8X mobo
256 mb DDR-333
GeForce 2 MX-400
Windows XP
Creative 12x DVD
HP cd-burner 4x4x24
8 gb Utra-DMA-33 hard-disk

Hope anyone has some tips.

Hiya, can't give you a solution yet (I am having a similar problem) but might be able to point you in the right direction.
You need to look for a file MSDEX.EXE, the file is needed to run the drive. I use win. 2k pro and upgraded from win. ME. The DVD-rom worked under ME but does not with 2k.
I am not familiar with XP so where the file goes (if you haven't got it) I have no idea (sorry)
Try and see if you have this file, you could also check the manufacturers webby to see if your dvd device needs a firmware revision now you've installed XP.
Let us know if you solve your problem, cheers, Osvaldo

Hi kocky:
That old a DVDROM may not be MS hardware compliant...and should be checked against the list at Microsoft.
The drive also might need (IF it's on the HCL) a firmware flash. The mfr.'s site will have more info on that
The nearest file to what FBAOsvaldo mentions is mscdexnt.exe and that's for using the drive BEFORE Windows loads.
The drivers listed on the machine I'm using (with a Hitachi DVDROM) are cdrom.sys, imapi.sys, redbook.sys and storprop.dll.
IF it's hardware compliant with XP and you've upgraded the firmware, delete it from Device Manager and let XP find it again.

I have a Creative 12x DVD.
does it see regular CD's?
does it have the decoder card?
I use the "REALmagic Hollywood Plus" drivers instead for windows 2k and everything works great. (more versatile)
sometimes the drive can be flaky reading CDRs.
I had to take the player apart recently and clean the laser pickup with lens cleaner and now it works better then ever.

to gargouille, the drive and decoder card work fine in the XP/2k OS... as long as you are not using the old creative drivers for the decoder card.(they lock up)

good luck!

Solved the problem.
It was Roxio Easy CD Creator 5 that was not compatible with Windows XP. Installed an update form Roxio. Now everything works perfectly.

Thanx for your replies.
