Can't access Media until I Erase the tape

How come I cannot access the media in the DLT drive under offline or online until I go to devices and erase tape. Then the tape appears under online and I can record to it. It seems if I don't do that then my backups just seem to run for hours and never actually finish. I usually have to cancel the job and end up with an incomplete full backup and/or incremental backup (i'm running a single drive under windows 2003 server using BE 9.1).

Any ideas out here?
