When I type mail at the command line, the message I get is 'No mail for username.' I know the mail is in the Maildir. How can I get to my mail on the server. Even Pine can't get to it. There are no error meassages in maillog. every once in a while I get a fatal message on the screen.

Here is a print out of pontconf:

command_directory = /usr/local/sbin
config_directory = /usr/local/etc/postfix
daemon_directory = /usr/local/libexec/postfix
debug_peer_level = 2
default_privs = nobody
home_mailbox = Maildir/
inet_interfaces = $myhostname, localhost
mail_owner = postfix
mail_spool_directory = /var/mail
mailq_path = /usr/local/bin/mailq
manpage_directory = /usr/local/man
mydestination = $myhostname, localhost.$mydomain $mydomain
myorigin = $mydomain
newaliases_path = /usr/local/bin/newaliases
queue_directory = /var/spool/postfix
readme_directory = no
sample_directory = /usr/local/etc/postfix
sendmail_path = /usr/local/sbin/sendmail
setgid_group = maildrop

Thanks,

Kevin P.

Postfix does support mailboxes. It's in main.conf somewhere.
I suspect you'd need to create /var/mail nad /var/spool/postfix if they're not already there. They need some special permissions.

Kevin,
Your problem isn't really postfix, but more a problem with pine and mail not supporting the newer Maildir format. mail (and mailx) are old and only support mbox format (i.e. old single file format in /var/spool/mail/...). As for pine, there are patches to make it read Maildir format, but UW refuses to add it to the main pine source tree.

Given that you have a few choices. 1. patch pine to read Maildir format, 2. Revert postfix back to using mbox format.

Hope that helps explain the problem.
