Hi, I have taken the HD out of my fried laptop and used a HD adapter to hook it up with my desktop so that I can recover the data. The desktop sees the drive but the folders will not allow me to access them. I keep getting a "access is denied" message. How can I get around this? Thank you very much for all your help.

Assuming its ntfs filestore, you'll have to take ownership (of the whole drive would be best). Its in the advanced bit of security properties (if you're running XP Home, you'll need to do this in safe mode from and Administrative user).
