Hi,

I have a very strange problem whereby one of my PC's on the network can't access the internet. It is set up exactly the same as all the other PC's but won't connect.

I can ping external web sites both by IP address and so I know I can get out to the internet and that DNS works fine, I just can't pull up an internet page. No proxy server is used and all settings are as per original default settings.

Any ideas? Many thanks!

In internet explorer > Tools > Internet Options > Connctions > LAN Settings > Automatically Detect Settings.

Hope this Helps.

Hi Neil,

Unfortunately it didn't work but I appreciate your help. I did check against the other PC settings and they are all set to detect automatic settings and work fine, that's why this particular problem is so strange!

Any other thoughts?

Many thanks.

have you tried with another browser?
Do you have any internet control mechanism?

Hope this Helps.

If you don't have a proxy server, turn off the 'automatically detect' setting.

Thanks guys... I haven't tried another browser so I'll try Firefox and I'll try without the "automatic detect settings" being on as well...

Rgds.

What's the message you get when trying to view a web page? The infamous 'page cannot be displayed" or a blank page. Either way, the problem is either with ie or the computer itself. First try cleaning up the clutter in ie. Choose tools > general tab. Under temporary internet files click on Delete Cookies, click ok; next click on Delete Files (if you don't want any stored offline pages check "Delete all offline content", click ok. Next click on settings, under "temporary internet file folder" the "Amount of disk space to use" needs to be at least 96mb, preferably about 200mb.
If your computer seems a little sluggish, you might want to check the resources available. For Win 98 , right click on My Computer, click on Properties, choose the performance tab, second line shows the resources free, should be at least 50%. If it isn't you'll need to turn off some of your programs. On Win 2000 or XP, right click the task bar, choose task manager, click on the performance tab. Available memory should be at least 50% of total memory, if not you'll need to turnoff a few programs.
As always, check for spyware and viruses.
Let us know and good luck!
