Hi, I am using Win2k Sp3, with IE6 and all the critical
updates, but still can't access Https websites. This PC
is on our small network and all the other PC (mostly XP)
can access Https sites fine. I've checked and no firewall
has stopped this https as a rule, I've checked the data and time of the PC, and I've made sure all
the IE settings are the same as the other PC's but it
can't enter them, one site just says this page cannot be
displayed in the usual explorer way and one bank site
displays a message (in the sites own web format) like
cannot connect to this secure site, check your firewall,
or whether the connection is timing out. What can I do
next or can I run a command just to see whats blocking
this?

Kind regards

Andy

First thing to check:
Go to Help -> About Internet Explorer and make sure you have 128-bit cipher strength

Next:

1) Make sure you have medium security set for Internet under Tools->Options->Security

2) Go to Verisign's website ( and click the "Secure Site" icon in the lower right. If you still get "Page Cannot Be Displayed", then it is definitely an SSL issue.

3) Make sure SSL 2.0 and 3.0 are checked under Tools->Internet Options->Advanced

4) Make sure port 443 isn't being blocked in any way from this PC

You didn't say whether this Win2K pc is running any kind of firewall (i.e. Norton Internet Security, Zonealarm, etc.). If so, disable it temporarily and see if the problem goes away.

don't forget to check the time on that pc. that will cause it also. good luck!

look at Microsoft Knowledge Base Article - 813444, it is for XPP but may be applicable to your situation anyway!.
I only needed to re-register softpub.dll, to solve this on my machine.

Hi!

I seem to have the same problem.
My system is win98 (second edition), IE6 (with sp1 and 128bit encrytion). I was running a norton firewall, but it expired so I'm pretty sure it's not running.

I can access the web, but not pages that are over a secure connection.

It was working fine until sunday when the clocks changed. This would imply it may be a time issue - how can I check this?
I tried all the other suggestions except port 443 - how do I check this?

Any suggestions are appreciated.

Thanks,

Gareth
