I am using the Windows XP VPN client to connect to a MS Backoffice Small Business Server 5.5 (NT). I can connect just fine, but once connected, I cannot get to any files on the server. I have tried using the run commnad (\\server\shared or \\209.254.78.151). I have tried using a LMHOSTS file. I have tried net use t: \\server\shared. I cannot even ping the server on the network, once connected.

Any ideas would be greatly apppreciated!

That's a good idea! Here it is. I changed the "real" names and ip's to fake ones, including the DNS entries...

C:\>ipconfig /all

Routing problem. Looks like both networks are on the 192.168.1.0 network, or at least the VPN adapter is given a pool from 192.168.1.

For routing to work correctly, your office network and your home network need to have different network addresses. One could stay at 192.168.1, the other needs to change to something else (perhaps 192.168.2). The VPN adapter needs a block of addresses that lie within the network on the office side.

May have other problems after that is fixed, but that is the biggest obstacle right now.

I'm a bit confused. I thought that you needed to be on the same subnet in order to browse the network at work. It seems strange to me that my PC at home with an IP of 192.168.1.105 cannot browse over VPN to files on a server that has an ip address of 192.168.1.50. Could it be because someone else on the work LAN has an ip that is the same as the one that I have on my home LAN?

I'm not sure how to test this. If I change my ip at home to another subnet I will lose internet access.

Never mind. I got it!

Thanks for your help mhkwood!

I changed my ip to a static 192.168.2.10 and my default gateway to 192.168.1.1 (so I could still get internet access), started the VPN, and was able to browse to the files on the server without any problem...

Thanks again!!!
