Cant access BEFSR41 4 port router

Trying to set up a home LAN but havent been able to access the router through 192.168.1.1 (tried 192.168.0.1 as well). Tried pinging the router from a computer that is currently plugged into it but have got no response back from the router itself. Actually tried it on two computers. The ADSL modem works great though, tried both crossed cables and straight cables but neither worked.

Any suggestions as to why I cant set up my router?

Also how do I determine the MAC address on the bottom of it. Are all numbers/letters supposed to be used?
 
First a plea, can you tell us the brand name and model of the modem and what operating system you are using on the computers? thanks, now we can look at the manuals with you.

I am confused by the modem works great and no cables worked, the IP Address of the modem is very likely 192.168.100.1 try that in Netscape and see if it shows you a web page

you use straight through cables from the Computers to the Router, it should have a web page you can access from your browser. I tried to remain child-like, all I acheived was childish.
 
Ok the ADSL modem is a linksys as is the 4 port router. I am currently using Windows XP. Tried using a straight through and crossed cable but to no avail.

What are the IP addresses of the computers you tried to ping the router from? Did you get a "destination unreachable" or did the request just time out?

Make sure the computers connected to the router are set to get their IP addresses automatically (DHCP). Linksys routers come out of the box with a default address of 192.168.1.1 and with the DHCP server running giving out addresses in the 192.168.1.100 range. You can either reboot the computer to get an address or open a command prompt/DOS window and type the following without the quotes:

on Win9x/Me machines
"ipconfig /release_all"
"ipconfig /renew_all"

on WinNT/2K/XP
"ipconfig /release"
"ipconfig /renew"

Once you get an IP address in the same range as the router, you'll be able to access the web page for configuration at 192.168.1.1. On the main page, you will find the MAC address. I don't believe it is on the bottom of the router.

Tried that but to no avail. Upon releasing and renewing my IP i just receieved a 168.254 ip number.

Also when I plug in my ADSL cable to the Router the WAN light remains red. Also the LAN link light on my ADSL modem goes off upon plugging into the router WAN port.

The cable coming from Port 1 to my computer lights up successfully though and I get a message on XP saying LAN is connected at 100 MB/S.

I dont know how it really works but you would think that with the connection from port 1 to my computer I could at least ping or access the router....
 
Just tried pinging 192.168.1.1 again and I got a reply but the funny thing is that Im only plugged into my ADSL Modem. So it looks like to me that the router and modem are using the same IP, how can I possibly change this???

Sounds like a couple of problems mixed up here. Let's take them one at a time.

For starters:
What model is the Linksys modem? the Router?
What OS are you running on the machines?
Are you sure the modem and router are connected properly?

When connected like this, what lights are lit on the DSL modem? the Router?

Are you sure the computer is configured to get an IP automatically. If memory serves me correctly, the 168.254.x.x address comes from APIPA which generates an address when a DHCP server is not available.

Is this router new out of the box? Was it ever configured or used before? If it was, try resetting it to factory defaults. You can do this by holding in the &quot;Reset&quot; for about 5 seconds.

Post back with this and we'll see where to go from there.

Ok, the models are as follows

Linksys ADSL Ethernet Modem (ADSLME1)
Linksys 4 Port Router (BEFSR41)
Ive only tried it with one machine, on XP Home

and Yup I am 100% positive that the modem and router are connected correctly, Ive worked with em before.

I just find it extremly funny that when I have a x-RJ45 cable coming from the ADSL Modem into my computer I can ping the ip 192.168.1.1, why in the world would I be able to do that?

When I have the ADSL in the WAN port and a cable coming from port 1 to my computer it says LAN is connected on XP. However I still cant ping 192.168.1.1 possibly because the router itself has a different IP seeing as the ADSL modem is using the default IP

I'm confused.

You say the WAN light stays red when you plug the DSL modem into the WAN port on the router. Do you mean the DIAG light? Red is not a listed condition on the WAN LED. If the DIAG light is solid red, you may have a fault in the router and may need to reflash the firmware. Again, try the loooooooong reset. I read somewhere that you may need to hold the reset in for up to 30 seconds to reset to factory defaults.

What type of cable are you using to plug the modem into the router. Is it straight or cross-over? You refer to x-RJ45 when plugging the modem into the computer. That type connection requires a cross-over as they are both wired as DTE. Modem to router requires straight-through cable.

Can you describe EXACTLY how everything is connected. I do not think the modem uses 192.168.1.1 so there must be some other condition not described. I can not find anything other than the press release for the ADSLME1 on the Linksys site. However, I did find some discussion threads on about it. They describe accessing the modems admin interface this way:

This is the info I got. You need to connect the modem directly to the back of your PC and change your IP to 210.65.231.2, subnet 255.255.255.0.

Then do the following:

1. Access the ADSLME1 via a Browser (*Note: PC must be on same subnet as ADSLME1)

At the Browser Window, type in the browser address field

Logon: root

Password: orion99

2. From the HOME Menu, click on [Basic Config]

3. From the CONFIG Menu, click on [Factory Default]

4. The following message displays: &quot;Load Factory Default&quot;

5. Click on [Submit] to restore the default configurations

6. The following message displays: &quot;Load Factory Default Successful&quot;

7. Click on [Save and Restart]

8. The following message displays: &quot;Save Configuration and Restart System&quot;

9. Click on [Save] to save the settings.

10. Click on [Restart] to restart the ADSLME1 with the new settings

11. The Browser may appear to hang while the ADSLME1 is restarting. After the ADSLME1 has finished rebooting (and the LAN LINK and ADSL LINK LEDs are solid green), click on the [Refresh] or [Reload] button on the Browser, or close and reopen the Browser Window.

Without any docs from Linksys, I don't know how good or accurate the above is. I asked before if these were new out of the box or used before?

Now for the router, the BEFSR41 is a router with an integrated switch. The switch should function almost independently of the router's connection to the internet. If you disconnect the DSL modem and plug a straight-through cable from the computer to the LAN port on the BEFSR41, you get a link light, right? You said you got an IP address of 168.254.x.x. If you do an &quot;ipconfig /all&quot;, what does it show the DHCP server as? I double checked the APIPA information. APIPA, the service that supplies IP addresses if a DHCP server is not available, uses a reserved range of 169.254.0.1 - 169.254.255.254. Was that a typo in your post or is it really 168.254.x.x? If so, it is not APIPA! Can you post the results of the &quot;ipconfig /all&quot; back here?

I contacted linksys technical support as I had found information regarding an article on their site saying that if the WAN diag light stays red then its more then likely that I have a faulty router. Im gonna go exchange it tomorrow and if it still doesnt work I will try the above.

The DIAG light can stay red also if you are using the wrong type cable. Please confirm whether you are using a straight-through or cross-over to connect the modem to the router.

i walked through the same situation with a cable modem for hours with tech support. changed cables, settings, machines etc. and believe it or not.....the darn thing was bad out of the box. l returned it to best buy, got another one, plugged it in and perfect. i tried everything to get it to work. all diagnostics were correct, but it just wouldn't access the net. it would however access my other machines. you should try to replace it.
 
Same thing happened to me, I went down and exchanged it today and plugged in the new one and bingo, worked beautifully. Bad straight out of the box.
