I'm not a newbie to computers but I don't know that much about hardware, dsl, etc. Someone else set up my computer for me.

I have a toshiba m45-s169 laptop, windows xp, accuton dsl 1000 modem, connecting using usb and whenever I try to access a web page then it gives me "the page cannot be displayed."

There is another computer (desktop computer) with windows xp using the same modem and it works fine. I connect this computer using ethernet.

I thought it might be usb so I tried ethernet and still no luck.

I can't remember exactly what happened before I had this problem because I have been able to surf the web in the past.

It seemed to have happened after my laptop did some automatic updates and I also forgot to turn off my computer the evening before. I was using the battery but it seemed to be ok because the computer turned on the next day.

I checked all hardware devices and they all said "This device is working properly." I did notice there was no "Ports (COM & LPT)" in the list but since I am a newbie to this type of situation. I didn't know if this needed to be listed.

Any ideas would be helpful.

Thanks

Usually dsl modems that have both USB and Ethernet only allow use of one port not both: you can use the USB, or you can use the Ethernet, but not both at the same time.

Did you turn off the laptop and/or reboot when you tried to use the Ethernet instead of the USB? Many laptops will disable the Ethernet port to save power if they realized that nothing is connected.

Can you communicate with the router using the customer-side address? It's usually or or
Check the manual for your model or you might find written underneath.

Usually the default U/N is Admin and the P/W Amin or password.

I did turn off my laptop before I tried Ethernet instead of USB and visa versa.

I tried http:\\192.168.1.1 and these have the status as UP:

DSL connnection status
PPP connection status
Ethernet Link
USB Link

Are both ethernet and usb suppose to have the status UP? I only have one cable connected to the dsl 1000 modem using usb.

Thanks

There can be alot of reasons for this, most of which don't have much to do with how your router is attached.

Your best bet is to call support.

You can do a couple of things first:

1) Check to see if you have tcp/ip installed. Go to run. Type ipconfig /all

What does it return? Make a note of it.

You can also see if you have an active connection by typing ping 127.0.0.1 you are calling up your own machine and seeing if it responds, essentially.

If this returns any information, you do have your modem or at least your card i nstalled correctly.

Now to go Start> Settings> Control Panel> System (for w2k... NT..XP is a little different). Click System. Go to Device manager (hardware). Look for Network device. Click on whatever adapter you have installed. Right click on the icon to see properties. Is it functioning correctly>

If not uninstall it and restart your computer...and this is getting way to complicated. Call your support people.

It's amusing and frustrating, but they do have a little information on hand.

Thanks everyone. I just hired someone to help me with my computer and I think he mentioned that it had something to do with a firewall so it now works.

If your wired computer has Wake on Lan capabilities, and many do, your ethernet board is never off.
