I have a web server and a file server in 1 location together on a lan and another computer in a remote location about 300 miles apart. Both locations are connected via VPN. Well the remote computer can ping and access the file server using the file server's ip address but I cannot get that same computer to ping and access the web server. Whats going on??

Hi Jacob,

What are the assigned IP addresses of the two servers? And what OS are they running?

both servers are running windows 2000 server sp4. the ips are 128.1.2.16 and 128.1.2.19 and the remote computer has only the different host numbers.

Choose different subnets on one end.
Because the subnet masks are matching, the ping request is locally routed.

I have changed the web server subnet mask from
255.255.255.0 to 255.255.0.0 but still remote computer does not ping

Have you enabled using the default local gateway at the servers end?

What are you using to create the VPN connection?
Two routers with a point-to-point type VPN config?
Is the server that you can ping the gateway for the VPN connection?
Can you ping the web server from the file server?

What are you using to create the VPN connection?
cisco pix515E, centralized vpn to other nodes.
Is the server that you can ping the gateway for the VPN
connection?
No it is one of the nodes in the vpn.
