CanoScan N650U / What is iMac u/d 1.1 ???? 1

I am downloading canon scanner drivers (CanoScan N650U) for a friends Mac (G4, OS 9.2)
However, I am told the drivers do not work properly, and when I downloaded the drivers it states that 'iMac u/d 1.1' is required.
What is this, and would it have anything to do with the scanner not working?
Does anybody have experience with similar problems?

I believe you need the imac firmware upgrade

where could I find this upgrade? I am informed that he could get the scanner to work with the original canon install cd, but this has been lost....
