I just got a Canon Pixma IP1500 printer. I have WinXP home.

When I try to print something, it tells me that the printer is offline. I then turn the printer off, wait a few seconds, and then on again. Then it works fine. This happens when I boot up in the morning, or if I haven't used the printer for a few hours during the day.

Does anyone know how to get rid of this annoyance?

check your settings.

Check for any problems with the USB controller(s) in Device Manager when the printer refuses to work.

If things are ok there, then uninstall and reinstall the printer and its software.

If no luck, then disconnect and reconnect the printer's USB cable at both ends without turning the system off when the problem happens. If that fixes things, then connect the cable to a different USB port.
If no luck, then try a different cable.
If no good, then the printer may be defective.

garebo and ski, thanks for your quick response.

garebo, exactly which settings should I check? I found nothing untoward when I reviewed the settings.

ski, I will try your suggestions the next time the printer doesn't work. Right now, it's working OK.

sorry
start\control panel\printer & faxes\canon pixma etc\properties
You may very well find a setting in properties that is causing this. I dont know of any offhand, just trying to help is all.

I do like ski's answer better, lol. But you never know, have to check the easy stuff first before you go onto the harder stuff is the way i think.

OK, thanks a lot.

I just spoke to someone at the Canon rep, and he told me there's not much you can do. It seems that the printer driver sometimes decides that there's not enough juice coming from the USB port (I've already tried 2 USB ports) and therefore decides it's offline.

There's a toggle button in the printer preferences to turn the printer on when this happens, but it's still a nuisance.

It's a good printer. Just too bad that somebody at Canon screwed up when they wrote the driver.

You can work around that by installing a powered USB hub, and connecting the printer to it.

Thanks. The guy at Canon mentioned that possibility, but I feel that I have enough outlet strips with power cords plugged into them under my desk right now, and I don't feel like adding another one.

?
You should see the 4 ft long huge, thick mass of cords and cables around my desk!
I thought everyone in the world who has a pc has a powered usb hub mixed in with their setup, lol.

Does Canon plan to come out with an updated driver to resolve the problem?

I don't think so.

The guy at Canon didn't mention it.

By the way, if I try to put another power strip under my desk, my wife may clobber me with it. (She has a nice, dainty laptop and doesn't understand why I have to plug in all those peripherals.)

Sorry, you didnt mention the wife before, now i totally understand!
The trick is to have your own separate room. Close the door, wife problem solved!
