cannot view username but account name

Windows 2003 domain
Want give permission to a user on a directory
User: John Smith, Username: JS

If try to add the user (enter object names..) with:
- Smith: it do not work, do not find
Message: remove smith from selection
- JS: it works

Any idea ?
