Hello, I hope somebody here can help me.

I have been able to use RDC on a particular server (Server 2003 R2 SP2, member server) for some time. The other day I did some windows update patches and assigned it a permanent IP address, before it used DHCP to get its address. We have AD integrated DNS and the host record represents the name and IP address correctly as does the PTR record in the reverse zone.

I reserved the IP in DHCP and filled in the details (physical address etc). Now remote desktop doesnt work, saying it has been disconnected because either RDP is not enabled (it is) or its too busy (it isnt, it never was before) or the network connections are preventing connection.

The windows firewall is off, I cant connect internally or externally, I cannot connect from XP or another server 2003 computer.

I have done exhaustive searches on this but none of the solutions work, has anybody come across this before? Could I have made a mistake with the DNS somewhere?

Regards,
D.

Statically assigning your servers is always the way to go...

Can you ping the server by name and IP? Can you browse the server of any shared files/folders?

Check the terminal services manager, ensure your rdp connection is still enabled and that you have the permissions to use rdp still...

Check your event viewer for errors and warnings on termserver.

Go to start, programs, administrative tools, "Terminal Services Configuration", click on the Network Adapter tab, make sure the specific NIC adapter for your server is chosen and hit apply. When ever you update your network adapter driver, you will need to reapply it. Even if you did not update the NIC driver, try it.

You may need to choose another choice, apply, then chose the correct NIC, and re-apply, bit quirky.

Agree with Karmic, assign statically, then do the above

I also have this problem at one of my sites!
Would i be correct in saying that you are not using TS setup to connect just the Remote Desktop Connection?

If so what i have found in my situation is that the server does not show all the workstations in network neighbourhood only the server icon and if i look in network neighbourhood on a work station it shows all the workstations but not the server.
The firewall is off even in GPO..

I can't seem to show the server even though it makes all the shared and if i \\server\***** this works from any workstation.

I have a image folder that i wish to deploy from ancronis, but i cant get to the image as the sever icon is not there in the setup path!!

I would be intrested in your results, I feel that this is something to do with the network card settings and programs!!

Hi everybody,

Thank you for your advice so far.

Karmic,

I can indeed ping with both name and ip address and browsing folders is not a problem. The RDP is still enabled and the permissions appear to be ok, and I have nothing in the event viewer either.

Technome,

I did as you described and I did need to select a specific NIC, it was set to any NIC, but as I have only one in it, I dont think it would have made a difference, however I did select the NIC in the machine, but it still doesnt work. I also made alternative choices and applied a couple of times.

Schtek,

I can see all of the pc's and servers on the network, so things must be slightly different.

I honestly dont know where to go from here other than a restart of some kind, or do you think I may need to reload/update the driver? I was going to restart the terminal service service, but of course it doesnt let you do it.

Thank you for your help so far, can you think of anything else I could try?

Regards,
D.

"restart the Terminal services"
You might try uninstall TS services, then reinstall via add/remove programs, add/remove components, takes only a few minutes, requires no server restart.

reset the tcpip stack

run netdiag.exe, any errors?

Hello,

I realised that terminal services would not be installed, its purely remote desktop for administration that I am trying to fix.

Will reseting the TCP/IP stack knock people off who are accessing the server? Im guessing it would.

I shall load up netdiag and see what it gives me.

Yes it will, you will need to do off hours, unlikely the cause but you never know. I would definitely do a server restart.
Sounds like a port issue.

Hello,

In the end I saw a window to do a reboot, and guess what? It all worked out fine in the end.

Thank you all for your help, I learnt a couple of trouble shooting tips I would not have otherwise known about.

D.
