I have a user who cannot use Internet Explorer 6 it was freezing up on her. She had several programs installed for fun so we uninstalled those and tried again. Same lockups. My technician working on it took IE back to the IE 4.0 version since he could not completely remove it and got the same lock up problems with IE 4.0.

We have loaded Netscape so the user can browse the Internet but now she has to log on to a government website that only supports IE.

I tried to open IE and get the IE 4.0 window in the background like it is trying to load. I get a dialog box saying this is not your default browser do you want to make this check everytime you open IE. At this point it freezes up you can neither check YES or NO in the dialog box and you have to CTRL+ALT+DEL end task to get rid of the IE page.

Any suggestions on how I could fix IE would be appreciated. She is running NT so I would like to get her back to a working copy of IE 6.0.

Thanks,
Amanda

Download and run in this order:

cwshredder *
SpyBot 1.2 *
AdAware *

* = Update the definition files within the program as the first step.

Step #2: download a do a clean/repair of your Winsock service entries using this utility:
If you still have the problem, download and run Hijack This! and post the log here.

"Sometimes I do not know but I try hard"- R.F. Haughty 1923

I'm not sure what roadblocks may be present due to previous attempts at fixing the problem, but I would run the IEradicator tool to strip Internet Explorer from the machine. You can get it here, it's a freeware utility:

Once cleaned, try installing 6.0 again.

I tried using IEradicator and it removed Internet Explorer 4.0 I then installed IE 6.0 and still get the lockups. I had run Ad-Aware before running IEradicator.

Here is the Hijackthis log that I got after downloading that software.

(Is that all that the log shows, or are there entries past the '013' point that you might have missed posting?)

When I did save log and chose a file location for the text file the 013 entry was the last thing in the log. I will run it again and remove those entries that you suggest. Then I will run again and make sure there wasn't anything beyond the O13 entry.

This is not on my machine so I will have to get to that users machine. I will try and post a reply tomorrow morning.

Thanks for the help you have provided thus far.

No problem.

Please note that I inadvertently listed this entry twice above:
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {EE392A64-F30B-47C8-A363-CDA1CEC7DC1B} - c:\SEARCH~1\bar.dll
My mistake, you'll only find it/delete it once.

I am betting that entry has to do with a MY WEBSEARCH bar that she installed previously. We tried to use ADD/REMOVE programs to uninstall it but trying to do that the uninstall would always freeze which is why it is still present. Maybe removing that entry will help some.

I used HiJackThis as you suggested to remove those 2 questionable entries. Everything is working great now. Thank you so much for your assistance.

Amanda

I am having a similar problem, but this time the computer locks up when closing IE. I uninstalled IE as much as the computer would let me, and I even went as far as reloading win98se. I ran hijackthis and the results are posted below:

Thecost,

You've got the commonname pest. Info here:

Since manual removal is such a pain, use SpyBot:
Remove anything that SpyBot highlights red.

After running SpyBot, rescan using Hijack This!
If any of these entries remain, remove them:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {8952A998-1E7E-4716-B23D-3DBE03910972} - (no file)

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [winnet] C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~2\ADDRES~1\winnet.exe
O10 - Broken Internet access because of LSP provider 'wps.dll' missing

Then, run the LSP fix found here:

Reboot. How is it running?

This is curious, but we'll leave it alone for the time being:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Action]

First of all you should really start a new thread as that way guarentees that you'll get more responses.
Secondly lockups are not always malware related. Finally before posting a hijack this log please look at the post referenced below:
