Hi,

We are using Livelink 9.5 on a Windows 2000 server. When I click on the edit function on, for example, a word document within livelink on an XP SP2 PC with Office XP (2002) I receive the following error:

"In order to perform this operation, you need to configure your browser to allow scripting Active X controls, and you need to install the Microsoft Sharepoint Services Client API. The Sharepoint client API is an optional component of Microsoft Office XP and Microsoft Office 2003"

All the above is turned on and the PC is completely up to date with all windows and office updates. The edit function works on an earlier PC image which makes me think that a specific windows updates is preventing the Edit function from working properly. Has anyone else experienced this? Any suggestions as to a resolution would be appreciated!

Do you have Explorer installed on your machine ? If so can you ensure that the URL and connection info for this server stored in Explorer are the same as in the web browser.

We do not have Livelink Explorer installed on this machine.

Microsoft lost a lawsuit over ActiveX, and pushed an update fixing the license issue.

See the following text for explanation:

"Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer (912812)" introduces a new way how IE handles ActiveX Controls. Included this Security Patch is also a Non-Security Patch for ActieX Controls. (See Article in 912812 below)

Due to this Non-Security Patch ActiveX Controls needs a additional Click to run them. (Described in 912945 below)
Microsoft offers a additional Patch to get rid of this behaviour. "Internet Explorer ActiveX compatibility patch for Mshtml.dll" (See Article on 917425)

Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer (912812)
Security Update Replacement: This bulletin replaces several prior security updates. See the frequently asked questions (FAQ) section of this bulletin for the complete list.

Microsoft Security Advisory (912945)
Microsoft originally released this security advisory discussing non-security update 912945 for Internet Explorer on February 28, 2006. This non-security update includes minor changes to how Internet Explorer handles some Web pages that use ActiveX controls and is being distributed to customers in phases. On Jan 9, 2006, Microsoft released this non-security update for Internet Explorer 6 for Windows XP Service Pack 2 to MSDN subscribers. On Feb 9, 2006 the same update became publicly available on MSDN. On February 28th it was distributed as a “recommended update” on Windows Update for Windows XP Service Pack 2 and for Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1.

Internet Explorer ActiveX compatibility patch for Mshtml.dll (917425)
Microsoft is releasing a compatibility patch that will disable the behavior of the Microsoft Internet Explorer ActiveX update that was originally released on February 28, 2006. The Internet Explorer ActiveX update is also included in Internet Explorer security update 912812 (Microsoft Security Bulletin MS06-013)

Hi DrDDT,

Thanks for the info! It looked very promising but after I installed KB917425 I am still getting the same issue.

You might want to check about WebDav do you have that installed in your livelink. In some windows for the livelink webdav to work you have to sometimes put the SharePoint WebDav client.Don't ask me why but I had to start a webdave service and install the client to get it working on one of my installs

Well, if I called the wrong number, why did you answer the phone?

Hi,

I have Livelink Explorer and Webdav installed on the server.

it sounds like the Edit function is trying to use the Explorer on the local machine, can you configure it for the server and then retest.

Hi
This error is usually found once WebDAV 3.5 has been installed on the system. Removing WebDAV from the architecture is one option of resolving the issue.

Besides, why would you use WebDAV if you have Explorer... Unless you have installed Embark (LL95Sp1 Only)?

Hi,

We are chosing to use Webdav over Explorer. Anyway I have actually solved the problem by installing the Sharepoint component of office 2003. It would appear that the sharepoint component of Office XP is not up to scratch. We have kept Office XP but have just updated the sharepoint component for office 2003 and so far everything now works!
