HI,
I have a windows 2000 professional workstation, that has a tendency to beep. This is not an error code, it just beeps when you type the wrong username/password for example. I have looked in the bios and found nothing relating to the internal speaker to disable. I have chosen no sounds in control panel sounds and multimedia and have muted everything in the volume control - but it still beeps. Does anyone know how I may fix this problem.

Thanks to everyone on this bb who has helped me so far, this is an excellent resource. Keep up the good work!

type the correct username/password ?
Sorry, could not resist ;-)

It sounds to me you ar making a big problem out of nothing, no?
It is not as if you are mistyping all the time, are you?

The beeps com from the error events from 2000 itself.

Hello,

It may seem like I'm making a big prob out of nothing but this would not be entirely true. I am building this machine as a standard build for the workstations on our network and due to working practices it is essential that no noises whatsoever are emitted by the workstations (I work in a large reference library type environment).

Thanks for your kind responses.

Two thoughts for you:

. TweakUI will turn off the beep. Download this PowerToy from Microsoft Download.

. There are several sites that offer support utilities for public access computer settings, including complete control over the speaker volume. Some browsing will find both free and modestly priced software utilities to be used in a public access setting. Here is one example:

This was suggested before, see thread616-575579

Beep -> No instead of yes

Speaking of which... I downloaded and installed the TweakUI PowerToy for XP (on my XP system... sorry for wrong forum) but I see nothing in my Control Panel or Programs list. How do I access the features of Tweak? In 98 and 2000 it always showed up as a Control Panel icon.

I have the same internal speaker beep problem on both my 2000 Pro machine and both XP machines. Surely there has to be a solution *other* than opening the box and yanking the speaker wire.

It may seem like nothing to you, but obviously it isn't nothing to those of us asking the questions... or we wouldn't be asking in the first place. And since when did a user of these forums have to validate a question in order to get it answered?

There are numerous *other* ocassions when this beep sounds - it isn't just when you do something wrong. Personally, I find it annoying and distracting and counter-productive.

rocmills,

Click the "General" folder, beep settings appear as the first item under current TweakUI for XP.
The beep as a system sound is actually quite complicated.

flaviooo above, with a registry entry is close to a solution. This is essentially the entry that TweakUI makes, although it does another trick if you watch closely.

In Windows 2k/XP there is a an absolute way to disable the beep if it comes from the PC speaker and not a sound card.

You can duplicate the TweakUI (or reinforce it) by going into Device Manager, select the "Show hidden devices" option, go to "non plug and play device" find the device
named "Beep" and set it to disabled.

If all of that does not work, you can in the registry enter "" as the default sound event; do a keyword search on the site to find how it was explained to remove this entry to enable System Event sounds again.

you said "Click the "General" folder, beep settings appear as the first item under current TweakUI for XP. "

Which sounds great... I (twice) downloaded and installed the TweakUI for XP from the Microsoft site. However, I cannot find the TweakUI icon *anywhere*! Not in my control panel, not in my programs. When I had Tweak on my 98 and 2000 systems, it showed up as an additional icon in the control panel. All of which leads me to believe I must be doing something wrong with the XP version, I just don't know what it is! LOL

Thanks for your help!

roc,
It is no longer a control panel applet.
Look in c:\documents and settings\username\Desktop\System Utilities

Or search for tweakui.exe

It is there. Now if you are going to ask me why it is hidden....... I just create a shortcut and drop it onto the desktop.

Huh, is it not supposed to be in C:\WINDOWS\system32\TweakUI.exe ?

Besides, it creates an entry in Start - Programs - Powertoys for XP ...

Marc and Bill:

Thanks for the clues. I swear I checked my programs menu, but I guess I could have missed it. I will have another look when I get home tonight. Again, thanks for your help!

Marc and Bill:

Guess what? I found TweakUI! LOL Right where you said it would be, in the programs listing of the start menu. I told it to turn off the *error* beep, but have yet to determine if it has turned off all those other annoying alert beeps.

That took you a while, haha!
But good you found it!
Have fun in silence now ;-)
