Cannot turn arrowheads OFF

I created a line segment using the pen tool in Illustrator 9, selected the line segment, and then added an arrowhead using Effect > Stylize > Add Arrowhead (or Filter > Stylize > Add Arrowhead). Now I can't draw a line segment using the pen tool without getting an arrowhead. How do I turn arrowheads off?

...the answer to this is in the appearance pallette, go to the flyout menu and make sure 'new art has basic appearance' turned on. There is also a button, bottom left of this palette that does the same function...
