On one of our servers, running Solaris7, we cannot su to root or local-console log in as root. (Access denied) We have halted system, booted to cdrom, cleared the appropriate field in /etc/shadow and reset root password more than once. In single user mode, we are able to su and console log in to the root account. Any one have any ideas? (No problem with normal user accounts)

Many thanks in advance...

Pete,
Have you had the opportunity to look at the /etc/default/login file? Normally the file needs to be modified if you plan on remote administration. You might want to look at your .profile, .cshrc, if you are using one. SunHelp.org is another web site that might have some additional information for you.

Thanks OBK,

Yes, /etc/default/login file is in order. We will check for /.profile or /.cshrc files and look SunHelp.org..

unless it's the home path of the su ... or the modifiers on the /sbin/sh or whichever shell root uses ...

should be able to su from any user on any solaris 7 system remotely by default, so i'd guess at the other thingamies.

Hey all. thanks for the suggestions. Upon further investigation, I have found that someone had entered a value of 180 in the fifth field of the root line in the /etc/shadow file. (max no of days passwd is valid) The password must have expired. After clearing this value, all was fixed.
