I install samba 2.0.3-8 on linux machine, when I tried to start samba by typing "/usr/sbin/samba start", it shows:
starting SMB services: [OK]
starting NMB services: [FAILED]

but if I just type "/usr/sbin/smbd -D" and "/usr/sbin/nmbd -D", it doesn't show any error message, of course, it doesn't start samba.

What may cause the problem? how to fix it?

Thanks.

Did you try running "testparm" on the smb.conf and see what is the output.

other suggestion is add your IP and PC Name in the /etc/hosts file and start samba again.

I guess you should not have any problem now.
