on a W2K SP4 server i installed NFSServer (and dependancies) from the command line install. I then cannot start the NFS Server because of the error:

the portmap service could not start as it could not register on port UDP 111. please ensure that no other program has registered on port UDP 111.

I have checked the MS site and i have none of the applications running which can normally register this port.

When i run a rpcinfo -b command on the port number i get a response from a local Sun Server. Does this mean the Sun box has locked on to this port? Any ideas as to which Sun apps could be causing this ?

Any help much appreciated - i am a bit stuck now.

Thanks.

funnily enough the port was being held by the arcserve messenger service. stop that service and server for nfs would start. bit of a pain that one.

Hi,

I think you can force arcserve to use different port during startup. Try search on windows website. I had the same problem and solved it. I forgot where I found the solution.
