Cannot start DB engine

Pruned large database for 1st time with no problems.
Serveral backups later ad Now I cannot get the database engine to start.
Arcserve2000 on Win2k.
"the service does not return an error.... this could be Internal Windows or internal service error"
Maybe I've missed the boat completely... I'm stumped.

try this,
go to arcserve server admin-admin-arcserve system a/c-do the password here and then hit ok. go to services-double click on the arcserve database engine service and change the log on as to this a/c and browse the arcserve system system account and give the password, recycle the database engine service.
Go to arcserve -database folder and remove all the files
starting with 'r' and also .cat files from the arcserve-temp folder.
