cannot start apache

I had Apache running and made some changes. Now when I start it I get the following error:

It refuses to start.

I had changed port directives to 5110 (web forwarding port) but now that I am trying to use a fixed IP I did not need web forwarding anymore.

I went back to port 80 and the above error occurred. Perhaps I failed to remove all changes. Can someone guide me here?

I agree. I think you forgot to change something back. It could be one of these directives:

Listen 192.168.0.2:80
Port 80
NameVirtualHost 192.168.0.2:80
<VirtualHost 192.168.0.2:80>

The only one you really need to bind is the Listen Directive as it is above. If you use the Port diective it should be set to 80. Then you can use the wildcard for the rest:

NameVirtualHost *
<VirtualHost *>

This means a lot less chaging if this ever happens again or if you have a lot of vhosts.

got apache started but log file shows error:

The symptom is that no matter what virtual domain I call up, it is the first one that shows.

I don't see any vhosts defined so I guess you just have one domain. If this is the case, uncomment &quot;NameServer localhost&quot; and change localhost to your registered domain name.

I don't see them defined in your httpd.conf file. And unless each one has it's own ip address, you need to uncomment the &quot;NameVirtualHost&quot; directive. Then each vhost container needs at least a &quot;ServerName&quot; directive. The bottom of your last post looks cut off so maybe that's why I don't see them. Can you copy and paste just your vhost containers here.

Looks like you may have exceeded some post-size limit? How about issuing this command, then pasting the output into a post:

grep -v ^# httpd.conf

That will eliminate all those commented lines, and leave just the settings that are in effect. --

ok, I restored an older httpd.conf file. I am back up again. I still did not understand why if failed to work so I will explain what I found.

I have the virtual domains set up at bottom of 'httpd.conf' and the 'NamedVirtualHost' entry already had a *. Do you want to troubleshoot this further? I will post the file if you do.

I don't know where you got this file from...but you need to customize it to your setup. The fact that this line exists:

#ServerName localhost

Tells me that you have done nothing to that file to carry over your settings from the old file. You need to go through the old httpd.conf and compare to the new one and change all applicable settings accordingly. Posting that new file on here without giving us any reference to the old one is worthless/useless.

I am happy for now as it is working. When I have time I will continue the thread.

I was trying to work with dynamic dns and discovered that with all the other services blocked it was not worth having dynamic DNS.

Back to a fixed IP and it works.

That is all that matters for now.
