I am trying to install Windows XP Professional as a Guest OS. The host OS is Windows XP Professional w/SP2 and I am running VMware 5.

I created a new VM specifying:

- Guest OS: Microsoft Windows
- Version: Windows XP Professional
- Memory: 256M
- Network Type: Bridged
- SCSI Adapter: Buslogic
- Disk Type: IDE
- Disk Capacity: 10G

It does not seem to want to boot from a Windows XP CD. I have tried:

- WinXP HE/PRO CD (MSDN Oct 2001 / Disc 1012)
- WinXP PRO w/SP1a CD (MSDN Aug 2003 / Disc 2334)

In both cases the VM just seems to lock up.

Side notes:

- the host machine only has 512M of RAM
- the host machine is a laptop running SpeedStep, so I updated C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\VMware\VMware Workstation\config.ini to include:

host.cpuKhz = 2000000
host.noTSC = TRUE
ptsc.noTSC = TRUE

as instructed by
The laptop is a Dell Latitude D610.

Suggestions?

It does not seem to want to boot from a Windows XP CD. " is not a very relevant afirmation...
what does it realy do .. you set to to boot from the cd and then...

It's nice to be important but it's more important to be nice.
Thanks for your attitude!

Well, that is pretty much a full description. ^_^ If I had no CD in the drive it said there was no boot media. If I did put a CD in the drive it just hung.

It must have been some weird error, because I deleted the VM and created a new one with the same specs and then it worked fine.

I don't know VMWare Workstation, but could be possible that both the guest OS and the host OS are compiting by the CD resource? (remember the autorun of windows, or when windows try to search what kind of data are in it).

Cheers.

Check with the VMWare session that you have the CD as the first boot device rather than the hdd.

Next are you getting a DHCP scan running or does it start to run from the CD?

Have you told the VM session to either 'Connect exclusively to this virtual machine' or 'Legacy emulation'?

I run VMWare workstation all of the time (XP, W2K Pro, W2K3 Server) and I do occasionally have issues with it not seeing the CD. On those occasions I have found that creating an ISO image of the OS has worked out ok for me.

The real world is not about exam scores, it's about ability.
