Cannot set "Read" status for mail in Public Folder

After a bit of advice here, We've got a client who wants a public folder to show unread/read status for mail globally which I thought would be easy enough. I've removed the check from "Maintain Per-User Read/Unread...." in the public folder properties. However, now, from the server it works correctly, but from the clients it won't work with anybody apart from the administrator. Even if the mail is right-clicked and "Mark as Read" is clicked, it won't set it as read, it stays in bold.

Anybody got any ideas?

Is there a fix for this? I have the same problem.
