cannot see file menu

the problem is that i cant see the file menu when it is selected ONLY when a document is open, it shows just the right edge and the rest is off the screen to the left, when no doc is open, i see it fine, and it worked like it should yesterday too.

does anybody know of a problem like this? or ever see this before?
