I know i'm missing something very simple here - we just got in about 10 new windows 2000 computers. Everything is fine about them, but when browsing the network from another computer, I cannot see them in my network places.

I can ping them by name, the computers can resolve names with no problem. The computers function fine on the domain, and if I'm on those computers I can browse the network with no problem. I've been playing around with the network settings on them for the last hour or so and I am missing something.

Every other 2000 machine we have (including some less than two months old) can be seen fine on the network.

If someone could point out what I'm missing here I'd greatly appreciate it.

Thanks,
Patrick

can you telnet a mcahine using it's IP Address. Chek on also Netbios configuration.

The netbios setting was set as use dhcp settings, and I changed it to use netbios over tcp/ip, as that was it was set as on the ones that works. I'll see if that works or not. I can call up most computers by typing in \\computername into my computer or explorer, but I cannot do that with the new computers.

In a domain setting, did you create new Computer accounts for these new machines under AD?

I joined the domain the same way I did with every other computer - the computers work perfectly fine except other computers can't see them on the network when browsing, which is a pain for me because I have a few programs to deploy out and I can't do that because I can't see the computers.

For each computer with issues:

. Client for Microsoft Networks, File and Printer sharing installed;
. No blank or empty passwords
. TCP/IP properties, Advanced:
. Under the WINS tab
. uncheck use LMHOSTS
. uncheck use WINS
. check to 'enable Netbios over TCP/IP'

. Under the DNS tab
. Have only your local DC or DNS server as the only address listed.

Reboot the workstation. It can take up to 45 minutes for the machines to appear, depending on setting.

bingo - that did it - showed up right after the restart - thank you!
