Hi,

For some reason the default 169.. IP address cannot be renewed on my system. I have tried ipconfig /release and /renew, but they don't seem to work. Even /release does not make my network adapter release the 169.. default address. I have made sure that the NIC is properly connected to the cable modem and the ping 127.0.0.1 works fine.

Thanks in advance for your help!

In situations where I had the same problem, the cause was another network adapter (be it Dial-Up, another NIC, or something else listed in your network stack).

Try disabling the other adapters in Device Manager and reboot. If that doesn't work, then try removing all devices and re-add the one you need. Sometimes the bindings can get screwed up.

The only other common cause I've seen has to do with the software firewall. If you've got one like Zonealarm installed, check to make sure that you didn't just disable it from the registry or msconfig. Doing so can still allow certain components of the firewall to run in the background denying access to the LAN or internet. Fire up the firewall and turn it off within the program. That's the sure-fire way of eliminating it as the problem.
