This happened to me today (in my current job providing tech support for for a university)
A user sent a pdf file to another user by email, the recipient could not open the file, adobe reader just spewed out errors.
The problem and solution : this was happening because the user (sender) had set up a helper application and associated it with pdf files, this caused simeon to add extra data about the file and associated helper and corrupted the file. removing the helper association solved the issue.
