Cannot read email history records

All of a sudden we cannot read certain history records that are linked to an email message either going out or coming in. This affects more than one user. I re-indexed and packed the database but no help. I also re-indexed the mailbox file individually.

We are using Goldmine 5.7 the *.dbf version.

We have about 12,000 contact records and about 115,000 history records. We have not purged old history records in years.

Some further information.
An intern I hired to do some simple database cleaning somehow deleted the mailbox file. I now have a file called "oldmailbox" with thousands of records and another called "mailbox" with only a few records, those for today.

What should I do (besides doing violent things to the intern) to restore the old mailbox?
