Hi,
I am having two machines; one with Windows 2k advanced server installed having all NTFS partitions and other one with Windows XP installed. These machines are not connected
by network as they are on diff. locations.
When I wanted to copy data present on NTFS partition to my XP machine by connecting that HDD to XP machine, but XP machine failed to recognize the partition. It says partition is there but no data. This works fine again on W2K machine.
Can you tell me what the problem is? Is it something related to partition? Is there any tool which can help me to read it on XP.

Thanx,

Prashant

Thanx bcastner...
But my problem is, Windows XP doesn't show any data..no folder structure, nothing at all. It says non dos partition present of 6 GB. When you try to open that drive, it shows 0 bytes used. The same HDD shows correct data on Windows 2k Advanced server. So I think this is not an issue with Security permissions rather its a NTFS compatibility issue with Win XP Professional.
So still waiting...

Well, NTFS is most assuredly a non-DOS partition. Each NTFS folder is assigned the Security Identifier (SID) numbers of those users who have the correct credentials to use the folder. The folders that were created and shared by the Windows 2000 installed operating system are not recognized as valid SID numbers of new users from the WinXP operating system.

Hence the need to edit the security settings on the drive to add the XP users and their SIDs.
So I think this is not an issue with Security permissions rather its a NTFS compatibility issue with Win XP Professional.

There are no compatability issues concerning NTFS under Win2k and XP. XP has a larger set of NTFS permission values, and is more adept at adjusing cluster sizes on large hard drives, but no compatability issues.
