When trying to place a jpeg in PM7.0 I get the error...
cannot place this file.
The file is already in use by another user.

Then some other verbage about it may be on a network share and make sure the other user has closed it.

Well it is on a network drive, the picture that is, because that is where we store user data. However, it is not "in use" by anyone else.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Hello,
Couple of things to try.
Usually when you get this error when placing a file it is caused by:
1Open the jpeg up in a graphic program and just do a save as. It could be corruption in the jpeg. If you do a save as it will clean up the file. Also make sure you chose BASELINE in saving the file. You DO NOT want progressive JPEG format since this file type will not place.
2. Close Pagemaker and rebuild your preferences. The address is probably as follows:
C:\Program Files\Adobe\PageMaker 7.0\RSRC\USENGLSH
Delete Pstyles, PM70, and PM70filt (make sure you take the preferenc file for the PM70 and not the resource file)
Go to Adobe's website and
Now reopen Pagemaker and open the file. Try placing the jpeg.
3. If you still have a problem then try a diagnostic recompose(see the link below)
After you do the recompose and saved the file try placing the graphic again.
Good luck.

ikonpro,
I ended up having to call Adobe and I was told by them that the Pagemaker program has VERY weak network support. Basically it has none. "If it works on the network then great, but otherwise it shouldn't work on a network" was the respnse I got from Adobe. They said I have to copy the projects and their supporting files to my local harddrive in order to edit them.

Just a little note to say thanks for the reply and this is what the "official" word on it is.

Juan
