My problem...I have a home network connected using a BT ADSL router (Efficient Networks 5861). My home pcs can all acccess the Internet and can all see each other. I have a printer hanging off one of the pcs. I can print to this printer from all four pcs. However when I connect to my office network over a Shiva VPN client, I lose all connectivity to my local home LAN. ie. cannot ping between local home PCs. The VPN connection works fine. Also I cannot connect to the Internet whilst using the VPN, unless of course I configure a Proxy within the browser. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks

In simpler terms, when your VPN is up, check your IP, you will see it has changed (normally) to one of the Shiva's addresses. That is why you lose the Home Lan.
If you need to do this alot, put in a second NIC for LAN use. If the solution is out there, let us know it was helpful, so others can benefit from it as well..

?????

Shiva doesn't change the local ip . . . it adds a virtual interface with an ip from the Shiva host. The problem comes about because the client software routes all traffic through the VPN. A second NIC is of little value, as it is never allowed to see any traffic.

Even if a second card would solve the problem, why mess with the extra hardware and routing when a simple change to the setup will take care of everything?

Well, that how I do it, and it works, you assign the 2 NICs to seperate subnets, LAN en internet(VPN).
your lan-ip will not change and all remains accessible.
The VPN changes the ip address the PC will use, so it looses the default one, hence the loss of the LAN, that is why I add a second NIC to route the local IP range through, not through the VPN. If the solution is out there, let us know it was helpful, so others can benefit from it as well..

Thanks for the prompt responses.

I solved the problem. Very simply, there is an option in the Shiva client to "enable Home Network" and " files". This was the cure, and can now access everything.

Thanks again

Hi:

I am not able to connect to the exchange server through Internet. In fact I am not even able to ping my sever ip address or name. However I am able to connect using VPN. Once connected thru VPN, I can't use the surf the web from my local client. It always says this page can not be displayed. any thoughts????

nishrags -- for a better response, please start a new thread. When you repost, please answer some additional questions:

What are you using for a VPN server, is your VPN connecting directly to a Windows 2000 server or and external VPN device?

What OS are you running on your VPN client, Windows 2000, XP, or other?

If you are connecting to a VPN server that requires special software, what is it, including version?

Doesn't sound like a hard problem to fix, just not enough information to tell you where to start.
