I have a network with 3 PC´s, a cable modem and a cable router.

My internal network is configured with the 192.168.0.x range. My router uses the 192.168.0.1 IP-address. Every communication with the internet works fine, however if I ping my external ip-address (the address my ISP gave me) I keep receiving "request timed out". I cannot ping the address from inside or outside my network.

I need this address to be available as I want to make use of VPN/Remote Desktop Connection to reach my home network from whatever location I am at.

What could be the problem?

I don't know what kind of router you are using, but the normally have a setting to "Allow PING from the Internet" and "Allow management from the Internet".

However, you don't need to be able to ping you router to set up a VPN. Just use it for troubleshooting then turn it off again.

Most likely the that the Router is set not to respond to pings. What brand and model is it?

I tried to remain child-like, all I acheived was childish.

I use a Netgear router and Respond to Ping is enabled and Management from the Internet is enabled as well. However management from the net is not working either.

For instance, when I try to use a VNC connection I use the internet address and in my router that address is forwarded to one of my workstations. This doesn´t work.

Has your ISP provided you with a static IP address, or is it DHCP? If so, have you checked it has not changed?

Andy,

I have a DHCP assigned IP-address, however the IP-number has been the same for over a year and off course I checked this as well.

Over a year? OK, so is this something that has just happened, or is it the first time you have tried to ping your router?

Actually I don't know if it has worked before.
What I want is to connect to my home pc (by VPN or VNC or directly to my home-page) from whatever location I am.
I started with this last week and only then I noticed I cannot connect by whatever method I use.

Port forwarding is configured on my Netgear WGR614 Router and every protocol (VPN, VNC, HTTP etc.) has been forwarded to the pc I want to connect to, however nothing works unfortunately.

Have you tried allowing all IP, just in case it is a problem with the protocol set you have allowed?

Sorry for the delay in replying, been away!

While not a guru, this is my understanding.

You ISP provides an IP address but your various machines beyond the router each have an address like 192.168.0.x and the router is doing NAT (network address translation). You need to program your router to forward the remote access to the right internal address. I have mine programmed to route FTP requests to one machine, HTTP to another etc.

you'll need to understand what ports and protocols your remote software uses and then forward those to the remote machine IP you want accessed from the outside.

You also will need to program your firewall (assuming you have one) to permit this traffic otherwise it will block this "suspicious" traffic.

good luck
