This is not as straightforward as it sounds. I have a HOSTS file correctly setup but cannot ping some of the names in the list. I can ping by IP address no problem.
If, however I open the HOSTS file and resave it without any modifications, I can ping by HOSTNAME no problem.
The next time the machine is rebooted the same problem arises.
The machine has an NTFS partition but the HOSTS file is changeable by user so permissions are not an issue.
I've never come across any problem like this before so would be glad to here of anybody who may have an answer
