Hi, all,
When I installed a DVD ROM drive, I mistakenly inserted the power plug in the wrong way (I know that was a big no-no). I fried the drive. But after that, I can't ping anything, even 127.0.0.1. All showed timeout. I checked the host file; 127.0.0.1 was there ok. My connection (two little computers in the system tray) icon has no activty at all. Did a IPCONFIG /ALL and looked fine. Checked all the network properties ok. IP address, DNS settings all checked ok. The IDE channel seemed ok too, because I can play CDs from CD ROM. It's strange. Does anyone has any idea to fix this problem?
Thank you in advance.
Gary

can you ping any computer near you ?

also you should bring the interface up , so that you can ping it ..

I mean your NIC should be connected to any HUB/Switch/PC so that the interface coms up , and you can ping it's local IP ( 127.0.0.1 )

Normally, if you can't ping your home address, you NIC is dead.

There's no place like 127.0.0.1.

Hi,
I can't ping any address including 127.0.0.1.
I uninstalled the Tcp/IP protocol; rebooted.
Then reinstall the Tcp/Ip without reboot; then I could ping 127.0.0.1 but could not ping any other address.
However, after anyother reboot, it back to square one - could not ping 127.0.0.1 or any addresses.
I can see the ethernet card and all its settings in the hardware profile. W2K reported the card was working properly.
I will replace the interface card and try again.
Any idea?
Gary

Use the card on another PC to check if it's Down or not ...

Hi, all, thank you for your replies. I finally fixed the problem.
I installed another LAN card and worked. But after a reboot, the problem came back.
What happen was that I installed a DVD ROM drive and a Pine SiS 315 32MB PCI VGA card at the same time. I made a mistake and fried the DVD ROM drive. The VGA card driver installation went smoothly and the display was great. I was so distracted by the DVD ROM thing and did not think about the display card. After the replacement LAN card worked and quit, it made me think about the display card.
Yes, it was the display card. I think that must be a TSR memory issue or it may not work with AMD motherboard.
Gary.
