When I try to open a web page I get the following message:
Server error: Cannot open file "service.lck" for writing.
That file name might be "service.ick", I can't tell which.

I understand that this might be a server error. I have full administrative rights. My OS is MS 2000 Pro.

I have tried:
1. Deleting the file (hopeing that it would be recreated.
2. Reinstalling FrontPage
3. Copying the file from another source.

Any help will be appreciated.

Yes, that is the file, and the one I deleted. I also copied one from another source into the same folder.

It is a network server, in a computer lab for high school students. The student computers are also running Windows 2000. Their data will come from the network but FP is installed on each computer.

I'm not sure what it takes to make the server a web server, and that may be my problem. My background is in programming, I teach the FP class because I'm the only one available.

Thanks

Don't copy it. Delete it. :)

Close FP & delete it thru the browser. And then open up FP. Now is this when you are getting the error message or when you try to publish? It if is when you are publishing - you might need to get the FP extensions re-installed. If it is when you are opening the web & cannot open it at all, make sure that that folder has read/write permissions. Try also Tools - Recalculate Links to regenerate a new service.lck file

I get the message when I click on File/Open Web and select a web from the list.

I tried everything you suggested with no joy; execpt that I did not delete FP from the browser. I thought maybe you ment delete "service.lck."

FP did not creat a new "service.lck." It had the same problem when I tried to open a different Web.

I can open a page. I get the same message when I try to publish to a web.

Thanks!

Working locally: FP cannot create a new service.lck without opening the web. Try opening up notepad & just going to file - save as - service.lck (make sure to choose all options).

Are you able to open any webs? Have you checked to make sure that FP is patched / updated along with the OS?

Did you also check to see if you had permissions set appropriately on the _vti_pvt folder?

Usually getting the message when publishing indicates an error with the FP extensions on the server.

I am not sure about any patches. I try to keep everything updated.

I have permissions set, I checked them.
I have put in a request for our MCSE to come check them out, but sometimes it takes two or three weeks to get him.

I will try the Notepad recreation idea, but I have to wait until Monday.

The extensions on the server are a mystery to me. How can I check them and/or reinstall them?

Thanks

JimRich

Hi JimRich, have you found an answer to this problem? I'm having the same exact problem and I'm in the same setting as you.

Thanks!

Jesse

Yes, my problem was that the "Read Only" attribute was set "on" on the folders as well as the files. When I turned "Read Only" off at the folder level the problem went away.

Hope this helps.
