No one is able to get into the system, even the console, unless they are already in. This happened in the middle of the day.
I'm hesitant to reboot with anything referencing the inittab.

Any suggestions?

Is /etc/inittab still there? If not, you could try and restore it from an mksysb tape or cd.

Never had that happen to me though...

HTH,

I am able to view the /etc/inittab, and make changes if needed.

have you checked for

A.full filesystems in your rootvg
B.permissions that are set wrong ( compare permissions for folders and files in rootvg with those of a working system )

rgds,

R.

Have you tried lsitab command? Perhaps there is a syntax error in one of the entries?

lsitab -a

should list all entries. See man page for more info.

HTH,

p5wizard

Thank you for all of your help. What happened was /var filled and about 5 services had stopped running due to that.
