I have produced a document in indesgin and copied it on to disc. But now the document wont open from disc. The message is "cannot open document, you may not have permission or file already open" - it isn't. The doc. has about 50 pages but the cover which is separate has only 4 pgs and it opens. What's the problem with my document?

When you say it's not opening from the disc, do you mean a disc like a floppy/cd/dvd or your physical hard drive?

Have you tried copying it onto your hard drive?

The file may be locked or Read Only. I know that when I used to copy a lot of files from CD to Mac and Pc servers that the file became automatically read-only or a locked or a hidden file.

This could be the case here? I don't know without more information on what exactly you're doing, where the files and the disc came from and what platform you're copying or opening to and from.

Thanks for your reply. I produced the doc on my mac preflighted/packaged i then saved it to the desktop. I then copied everything on to a dvd. Now I want to open the document from the dvd but can't. Also on th dvd is the cover which i can open.

As a last resort you could try dumping your InDesign preferences.. maybe? You will lose any preferences you have set up.

But before that:

I can't think of a single reason why this is happening. Have you checked the file properties to make sure the file isn't locked.

Have you copied it to your hard drive to see if it will open, perhaps the file is damaged some how, this will tell you if it is.

Check your original file that it isn't locked or anything strange with the properties.

Try copying just the InD file to another disc and see if it opens.

Let me know how you get on with that.

Are you certain that InDesign did not have the document open when you burned it to disc? The document should be closed before copying files.

Thanks for your reply. Original file was locked! I have unlocked but still the file wont open. I've tried copying to new discs but no joy. Don't wont to dump preferences. Will keep trying.
Cheers
