Please help..I can't open "my computer" "recycle bin" or "my document" shortcut folders on my desktop by using the left click button on mouse...when I click on, it partially opens, then locks up my computer completely.....please help>....

Some background would be useful (presume machine hasn't always been like this - so, when did it start, had you added/removed andy hardware/software prior to this, had a virus, major crash)?

If you have system restore enabled, you could try restoring to a point before the problem occurred.

I'm not entirely sure if this is true or not, but I heard that if a computer locks up, but you can still move the mouse-cursor, then it's a software problem, but if EVERYTHUNG locks up, it's most likely a hardware problem........ [whether it's true or not I don't know, but I've been going by that since I purchased this pc]

More information would be nice though hereseyurmail :)

thanks for the help ya'll...i havent to my knowledge added any new software, downloads, and definitely no hardware lately...it just started couple days ago..have run scan disk couple of times, it fixed any errors, i also did a system restore to when it worked ok, that didnt help either...i don't hear any strange noises from my hard disk, and i can access internet, winamp, viruscan console, etc. ok...it's just the 3 i listed above...win me has been pretty stable for me for 2 years until recently, i'm stuck..anything you can help with is appreciated...thanks again......oh, my memory free is ok and system monitor numbers look ok...the mouse still moves, but that's the only response i get...

I know it was in 98.. but not sure in ME...have you tried deleting the file shelliconcache?...that may fix the problem with those icons...had a msword problem one time that would not open from the shortcut...but would from inside the program folder...this might work for you

Question: Does it still happen from within Safe Mode?
