I have a user that has linked an Excell file in Access 2000. Now I cannot open the file in Access or Excell. This is a mission critical file and unfortunately, this file was stored locally and not backed up. Can anyone provide me with any information on how I might be able to open this file, or unlink it so that I may recover this data? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you. Unfortunately, I cannot yet see the information in Access. I am certainly no DBA, but from what I can tell it appears to be an ODBC call from Excel corrupting the file. I also tried your tip of holding the shift key and trying to launch the form with no success. Is there a way to remove an edit lock or unlink this file even though I cannot access the data? As I stated yesterday, this is unfortunately very important spread sheet and I am at my wits end with it. Thanks again for your help.

Okay, DL, I don't understand. Are you saying you cannot open the database, the table itself, or you cannot get "under" the form/switchboard?

If you are afraid it is in use, and it is stored on the network, ask them to restore the database (provided you won't lose to much) or ask them to get you a copy from a week (or so) ago.

The problem is the database and the file were stored locally on a hard drive. I can still accesss the database. However, when you try to re-establish the link, it will not allow it. What appears to be happening is when the file was originally linked, it established an edit lock and now I cannot access the file through either application. Neither the database nor the file were moved from thier original location. I would think there has to be someone of undoing an edit lock so I can recover this information. Thanks again for all your help.

The error I am receiving when I try to access the file is as follows:

"wsac fdr history 88.xls cannot be accessed. The file may be read-only or you may be trying to access a read only location. Or the server the document is stored on may not be responding. "

If you click retry, the error just reappears. Please understand I am not an application specialist. I am a Certified Netware Engineer trying to wear too many hats. So I am sure there is something simple I am missing. I really appreciate your willingness to help me with this issue.

And I don't do the network thing, so forgive me if I ask this wrong...

have you "refreshed" the network (drive?)
have you rebooted the PC
are you running nav on the server?

That's a common problem, ya know. I'll get the article in technet for ya.

The answer to your first 2 questions is yes. As for nav, I am afraid I am at a loss. I will take a look at the articles. I had a major server crash yesterday so I am just now getting back on this issue. Thanks again for all your help.
