I have a HP Laserjet 1000 My desktop has XP Pro, My laptop has XP Home. I had this printer networked before, but since got a new hard drive in the desktop and cannot get it to network the printer!! 5 hours later Im asking for 'directions' :)

I might be missing a simple thing here? Tell me if this was the proper steps...
1. I set the printer (hooked up by USB001 ion desktop) set share as 'HPJET'
2. set up network connection (desktop) by choosing 'this computer connects through residential gateway'
3. set up network connection (laptop) by choosing 'this computer connects through residential gateway'
4. on laptop; add new printer, network printer
but... it will not even show my 'desktop' network at all! I feel the problem is with the network setup?? I tried different ways on connections ie: 'these computers connect through a hub and other computers also connect through this hub'
I use a 5 port switch, I connect to the internet no problem but I cannot get a network connection??? Also does the firewall have to be enabled or disabled?

PLEASE, HELP... I REALLY would appriciate any help.. :)

Did you remember to install File and Printer Sharing in Network on both computers?

One of the unfortunate aspects of the Network Wizard under XP is that it immediately enables the ICF firewall, which oddly blocks network traffic:
Disable the thing:
A good checklist for getting things to work using Simple File Sharing - enabled:
