Hello all,

I am having trouble with getting a network drive mapped in Windows XP. When I try to map the drive like this:

\\server\share

or

\\server.ms.system.com\share

I get the following error message:

The mapped network drive could not be created because the following error has occurred:
A device attached to the system is not functioning

When I map the drive with the IP address of the server, I can connect fine.
Has anybody seen this specific error ?

Thanks a bunch in advance for your help.

Naz

Try using the net use command from the command prompt. Generally you will want to use: net use * \\server\share. The * tells the command to use the next available drive letter.

For a complete list of parameters, do net use /?

The error implies that you are attempting to over-map an existing, real device.

PRPhx has suggested allowing an auto-assignment to the next free device with the "*" parameter in NET USE. That would certainly handle the issue.

But I would also examine carefully the local device for hardware problems.
