how is it possible to be able to provide internet and email services to 98 dial up clients but yet they cannot map network drives or browse the network via network neighbourhood???

i am under the impression that a dial up client should be able to browse, map drives etc as though they are connected via a normal LAN connection!

any ideas would be appreciated

thanks

It's a permissions kinda thing - try giving the logon user connecting via RAS permission to map drives, and on the drives in question, make sure that logon has permission to use the drive.

i dont think it is permission related as the error message is something like unable to locate "servername". it seems to me more like a netbios name resolution problem although i have configured wins in dhcp and also actually on the client still to no avail.

Just a thought - are the workgroups the same? If not the remote user won't see the network. Change the remote machine to use a workgroup name that matches what's used on the server.

If that doesn't work try specifying the IP address of the server and the associated domain controller if using the domain model rather than workgroup model. Put these in the LMHOSTS file. After you edit, run NBTSTAT -R on the remote and then try viewing the network.
