Cannot make IE default cause it's grayed out!

They want to force me to use an antiquated browser at work and have grayed out the checkbox to make IE the default browser when clicking on hyperlinks. Anybody got a way around this so I can stop using the old browser and start using the new?

Nope. And I don't think you're going to get much help here as far as thwarting policies put in place by your employer. It may be an antiquated browser, but it's obviously the one they want you to be using.
